Cumbres Pass serves as the central focal point of this high-altitude survey of the southern Colorado Rockies. Located within the Rio Grande National Forest, the small settlement of Cumbres is positioned at the intersection of major geographic divides. The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail winds through the southwestern corner of the quadrangle, crossing the boundary between Conejos and Archuleta counties near Neff Mtn.

Hydrography is abundant throughout this alpine landscape, with numerous bodies of water such as Garcia Lake, Red Lake, and Waterdog Lake dotting the terrain. The drainage systems of the Rio de los Pinos and the N Fork Rio de los Pinos define the local valleys, while peaks like Jarosa Peak and Pinorealosa Mtn overlook significant mountain passes including La Manga Pass.
