The settlement of Curtis serves as the focal point for this 2019 survey, situated on the narrow strip of land separating the massive basins of Manistique Lake and South Manistique Lake. The geography is defined by complex shorelines and numerous peninsulas, including Sprangs Point and Long Point, which reach into the deep blue waters of the surrounding lakes. While the shoreline near Crisler Shores and Portage View Dr reflects more modern residential patterns, traces of the region’s earlier infrastructure remain, such as the Old Bryan Grade winding through the lowlands to the west. Interior wetlands and smaller water bodies like Shoepac Lake and Hempfield Lake are connected by waterways such as the Shoepac River, illustrating a landscape shaped by glacial heritage and water-driven transportation routes. Curtis Cem is located just north of the village, providing a fixed point for family history research in this corner of Mackinac County.
