Lost Trail National Wildlife Refuge anchors this section of Flathead County, protecting the wetland complex surrounding Dahl Lake. The landscape is defined by the intersection of major public lands, including the eastern edge of the Kootenai National Forest and portions of the Flathead National Forest. This terrain is deeply carved by a network of drainage systems, most notably Pleasant Valley Creek and Elbow Creek, which flow through the forested valleys toward the refuge basin.
