The Department of Energy Uranium Reserve dominates the high ground of this western Colorado landscape, marking a legacy of mid-century industrial activity. The terrain is defined by dramatic mesas and deep canyons, including Martin Mesa and Davis Mesa, which flank the broad Paradox Valley. A complex network of 4WD trails provides access to numerous mineral sites such as the Groundhog Mine, Florence Nellie Mine, and Cripple Creek Mine.

Hydrological features like the Dolores River and its tributaries, West Paradox Creek and East Paradox Creek, cut through the geological layers. Researchers will find numerous legacy labels of the uranium mining era, from the Black Shot Mine to the Vanadate Mine, alongside more ephemeral markers like Grave Spring and the Aqueduct trace. The map also records specialized industrial infrastructure including several Air Shafts and a Gaging Sta on the river.
