Dead Lakes dominate this Panhandle landscape where the Chipola River flows south toward the Apalachicola River corridor. The geography is defined by a labyrinth of cypress-heavy waterways, including the Chipola Cutoff and several sloughs like Grayson Slough. Small residential pockets and fishing camps such as Chipola Park and West Arm Bridge appear along the western shores, connected by a network of local roads like Cain Forner Rd and Tomato Patch Rd. On the eastern side of the swampy expanse, the landscape transitions into the riverine bottomlands near Iola and Kentucky Landing. Significant local history is preserved at the Jehu Cem near the southern bend of the lakes. This 2012 survey illustrates the modern configuration of this unique ecological junction, where the river systems converge among landforms like McCabe Island and Greenback Lake.
