2021 Map of Deadman Mountain

About this map

Black Hills National Forest land dominates this landscape on the border of Lawrence and Meade counties. The terrain is defined by its deep drainages and prominent peaks, including Deadman Mtn and Bear Den Mtn in the north and Flagstaff Mtn to the south. A complex network of Forest Service roads and trails like Galena Rd and the Camp Five 047 Trl provides access through these heavily wooded gulches. The eastern slopes are carved by numerous canyons such as Deadman Gulch and Forbes Gulch, while the Big Elk Burn area in the southeast indicates a history of transformative forest fire. Water resources are critical in this high-elevation environment, evidenced by the Sturgis Reservoirs and the passage of Elk Cr and Little Elk Cr through the interior.
