Along the riverbanks and tucked into narrow valleys, various outposts such as Nighthawk, Ox-yoke, and Swayback Ranch provide evidence of rural habitation. Recreational use of the forest is visible through several designated grounds, including Platte River Campground and the Top of the World Picnic Ground. An inactive mine located in the northern reaches near Russell Gulch points to a quieter era of extraction, while Snow Water Springs and numerous creeks like Gunbarrel Creek and Saloon Gulch drain the surrounding mountains.
