About this map

The Denver Board of Water Commissioners managed a complex water infrastructure here in the mid-1940s, anchored by the South Platte River and the Highline Canal. The settlement of Kassler serves as a focal point near the Filtration Pond and Reservoir, where the transition from the high plains to the foothills is marked by the prominent Hogback. This geological formation separates the industrial and agricultural developments to the east from the protected terrain of the Pike National Forest to the west. Evidence of early 20th-century life is scattered through the drainages of Willow Creek and Indian Creek, where rural schools like the Indian Creek Sch and Roxborough Park Sch supported isolated communities. In the northeast corner, the dual rail lines of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway parallel Plum Creek near Louviers, illustrating the vital transportation corridor connecting Denver to the southern territories.
