Deer Peak rises at the center of this mountain landscape, marking a high point within the San Isabel National Forest at the border of Custer and Huerfano counties. The terrain is defined by a complex network of canyons and gulches, such as North Deadman Gulch, Treasure Gulch, and Rushmer Canyon, which funnel water into various drainages like S Hardscrabble Cr and Ophir Cr. High-altitude meadows and open spaces including Junkins Park, Antelope Park, and Burris Meadow offer rare level ground amidst the steep slopes of Wixson Mtn and Piltz Mtn. While mostly roadless forest, a few routes like Gardner Rd and 165 penetrate the backcountry, connecting localized features like Wixson Divide and Bigelow Divide to the wider region.
