Mesa de Maya dominates the western portion of this high plains landscape in Las Animas County, where massive flat-topped formations drop off into a complex system of drainages. The topography is defined by significant relief between the summits of Black Mesa and Mid Mesa and the deep incisions of Dennis Canyon and Sheep Pen Canyon. These features illustrate the dramatic erosion patterns typical of the Colorado plateaus, where seasonal water flow has carved the earth over millennia.
