The Arkansas River corridor east of Pueblo is defined by a complex network of agricultural irrigation and small railway-aligned settlements. In this 2019 survey, the managed flow of the river is supplemented by man-made infrastructure like the Booth Canal and Excelsior Ditch, which support the dry lands surrounding the Saint Charles River confluence. The transition from the urban periphery of Pueblo to the rural plains is marked by the Pueblo Memorial Airport and a series of historical stop points such as Baxter, Devine, and Nyberg. Local genealogy and history are preserved at the Chico Cem near the banks of Chico Cr, while the terrain to the south rises toward Hidden Mesa Dr, overlooking the river valley and the waters of Thunderbird Lake.
