Rio Hondo and the San Gabriel River converge in the southern reaches of this San Gabriel Valley landscape, creating the expansive Whittier Narrows natural area. The terrain is defined by the significant hydrological management of the Whittier Narrows Reservoir and the San Jose Creek Diversion Channel, which protect the densely settled communities of El Monte, Rosemead, and Pico Rivera. To the south, the Montebello Hills and Puente Hills rise above the flat basin, providing a distinct topographical boundary to the suburban sprawl.
