Apache National Forest dominates this high-elevation landscape in Catron County, where the topography is defined by the massive Escondido Mountain and the prominent El Caso Peak. The area is a critical corridor for the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, which winds through the eastern portion of the quadrangle past Canon del Macho. Water resources are a defining characteristic of the local geography, ranging from the recreational waters of Quemado Lake to numerous livestock tanks and springs like El Caso Spring and Leuba Spring.
