About this map

The Honouliuli region of Oahu is dominated by the sprawling infrastructure of the Barbers Point Naval Air Station and the industrial activity of the plantation era. This 1953 field-checked survey highlights the distinct cluster of plantation housing known as villages, including Tenney Village, Renton Village, Fernandez Village, and Varona Village, which supported the local Sugar Mill and Ewa School. The landscape transitions from the coastal Oneula Beach and the Lighthouse at Barbers Pt toward the volcanic peaks of Puu Makakilo and Puu Palailai. Scientific and military installations are prominent, from the USC&GS Observatory to the Schofield Barracks Military Reservation, while the interior is marked by the agricultural systems of flumes and pumping stations that fed the sugar industry before the rapid urbanization of the late twentieth century.
