Fairbanks is situated at the northern edge of this Saint Louis County landscape, where the headwaters of the West Branch Cloquet River and the North Branch Whiteface River begin their respective paths. The terrain is defined by a dense network of glacial lakes and creek systems, including the elongated Wolf Lake, which is regulated by the Wolf Lake Dam. These water bodies are central to the geography, with Bassett Lake and Cadotte Lake anchoring the northeastern corner near the community of Hornby.
