The Au Sable River meanders through the southern half of this landscape, defining the transition between the rolling woodlands of the Huron National Forest and the agricultural settlements to the north. Near the river, Comins Flats provides a distinct terrain marker alongside the Comins Cem, while further west, the edge of Mio and its associated Mio Cem appear near the Oscoda County Airport. This region of Oscoda County is characterized by a network of creeks like Comins Cr and Perry Cr that feed into the larger river system.
