Grand Canyon National Park dominates this landscape where the desert plateau drops precipitously toward the Colorado River. The drainage patterns here are exceptionally defined by steep-walled features such as Fern Glen Canyon and Stairway Canyon, which channel water toward the river's path. At the base of the gorge, the Fern Glen Rapids represent a significant navigational point on the water.
