The high desert landscape of the Tooele Co / Utah Co border is defined by a series of significant mountain gaps and early transportation routes. Near the settlement of Fairfield, the terrain rises into the Thorpe Hills, which are punctuated by a sequence of named passes including Fivemile Pass, Sevenmile Pass, and Tenmile Pass. This area has long served as a corridor for travel and industry across the scrubland, evidenced by the presence of Topliff at the southern edge near Topliff Hill. The historical infrastructure of the region is preserved in the naming of modern thoroughfares like Railroad Bed Rd, which traces the path of former rail lines through the valley. Natural features such as Sabie Cr and isolated heights like Poker Knoll and Powder Knoll provide distinct landmarks in an otherwise stark, arid environment dominated by expansive sagebrush flats and rocky outcrops.
