The Absaroka Range dominates this portion of the Shoshone National Forest, where the North Fork Shoshone River carves a deep valley flanked by remarkably named geological formations. Distinctive volcanic rock features such as Old Woman Cabin Rock, Slipper Rock, Camel Rock, and Laughing Pig Rock cluster near the small settlement of Holy City. This area’s topography is defined by the massive Wapiti Ridge to the south and Signal Peak to the north, creating a landscape where water and elevation dictate all movement. Early irrigation infrastructure is evident through several water-diversion features like the Big Cr Ditch and the N Fork Valley Ditch, which draw from the network of alpine streams including Grizzly Cr and Lost Cr to support life in the valley floor.
