About this map

Glacial potholes and shallow basins dominate this corner of the Coteau des Prairies, where the topography is defined by dozens of wetlands including Goose Lake and Lonesome Lake. The landscape reflects a transition between natural prairie preserves and the organized section lines of South Dakota agriculture. A portion of the National Wildlife Management Area occupies the northeast, while the Sisseton Indian Reservation Boundary cuts through the eastern sections. Local life centers on the rural community institutions of Egeland township, specifically the Egeland Ch and the nearby Egeland Cem. These landmarks, along with a Gravel Pit, mark the few departures from the surrounding prairie and farmland across Central Point, Wheatland, and Dexter townships. This 1970 field check also documents the winding drainage patterns of Foldager Slough and Arneson Slough.
