The eastern edges of Death Valley are defined here by the high elevations of the Black Mountains and the Greenwater Range. This mid-century survey captures the remnants of early 20th-century mining activity, marking the locations of Furnace (Site) and Greenwater (Site). These former copper-mining boomtowns are situated near the head of Greenwater Canyon, with a small Cem still noted at the latter.

Strategic water sources like Greenwater Spring and Sheep Spring reveal the critical survival points in this arid landscape. To the west, the dramatic overlook at Dantes View provides a vantage point over the basin, while to the south, the terrain rises toward Funeral Peak and the high ridges of Smith Mountain. Numerous Mines and Prospects are scattered across the slopes, particularly near Coffin Pk, showing the extensive mineral exploration within the Death Valley National Monument boundaries.
