Black Mesa anchors the southern expanse of this Las Animas County landscape, overlooking a series of deeply incised drainage systems that define the regional geography. The primary watercourse, W Carrizo Cr, winds across the northern half of the sheet, joined by Tecolote Cr as it carves through the high plateau. The terrain is characterized by a complex network of named ravines, including the prominent Furnish Canyon to the east and Baldy Canyon in the northwest corner. This 2022 survey captures the modern rural infrastructure of the area, where county roads like Co RD 213.8 and Co RD 4.3 provide the only access through the canyons. Evidence of local ranching or grazing history is suggested by the naming of Sheep Pen Canyon in the west, illustrating how the geography was utilized by early settlers and modern inhabitants alike.
