The Little Pee Dee River and its intricate network of sloughs and backwaters define the western landscape of this South Carolina quadrangle. This area, marking the boundary between Marion Co and Horry Co, is characterized by a dense mosaic of fluvial features including Snowbird Lake, Jack Lake, and the winding Old Dead River. Inland from the river's floodplain, the topography transitions into sandy ridges and expansive swamps, such as Long Sand Ridge and Turkey Pen Swamp, which have historically dictated the placement of small agricultural communities like Ketchuptown and McQueen Crossroads.
