Gallatin Peak and Wilson Peak dominate this high-altitude landscape in the late 1980s, marking the convergence of the Spanish Peaks Wilderness and Lee Metcalf Wilderness. This survey captures the region during a period of transition, showing the early infrastructure of Big Sky Meadow Village including its Golf Course, Substation, and a nearby Trailer Park.

While much of the terrain remains preserved within the Gallatin National Forest, evidence of earlier exploration is found in several Prospects and a Prospect located near the Lower Basin. A complex network of drainages including the Middle Fork West Fork Gallatin River and South Fork West Fork Gallatin River carves through the mountains, supported by high-elevation water bodies like Hell Roaring Lake and Jumbo Lake.
