Jaroso and Garcia anchor this high-altitude agricultural landscape at the southern edge of Colorado, just as the 21st century's first decade drew to a close. The region is defined by a sophisticated gravity-fed irrigation network, where the Eastdale Branch Cerro Canal, Reservoir Ditch, and Mesa Ditch distribute water from local sources to the surrounding farms. At the heart of this system lies Eastdale Reservoir Number 1, regulated by the Eastdale Number 1 Dam.

To the east, the rising terrain of San Pedro Mesa provides a sharp contrast to the gridded farmland below. The settlement of Mesita stands to the north, connected by a strictly rectilinear road system that reflects the early surveying and partitioning of this valley. Tracing the path of Costilla Creek as it winds toward the border reveals the vital relationship between the natural hydrology and the man-made canals like the Chalifa Ditch that sustain these rural communities.
