Settlement in this corner of the San Luis Valley is defined by an intricate network of irrigation, captured in this 2022 survey of the Colorado-New Mexico borderlands. The small communities of Mesita, Jaroso, and Garcia are linked by a complex system of water management features, including the Eastdale Culebra Canal, Chalifa Ditch, and the Eastdale Br Cerro Canal. These man-made waterways draw from Costilla Cr and the Eastdale Reservoir Number 1, illustrating the region's agricultural reliance on diverted snowmelt from the nearby mountains.
