Big Bay de Noc and the northern reaches of Lake Michigan dominate the southern coastline of this Upper Peninsula landscape. Much of the interior is defined by the protected wetlands and timberlands of the Hiawatha National Forest, where a complex network of waterways including the Fishdam River, Little Fishdam River, and Spring Cr drain toward the bay. Small clusters of development are concentrated near the coast, notably at the junction of Garden Corners and the settlement of Isabella.
