About this map

Desert National Wildlife Range dominates the northern portion of this 1970s landscape, where steep contours rise sharply above the developing valley floor. The map records the early expansion of Las Vegas and its northern neighbor, showing the encroachment of city corporate boundaries into the desert scrub. Notable features include the Home of the Good Shepherd and the isolated June Bug Mine located high in the northern range. The emerging suburban grid is visible through the early alignments of Rainbow Blvd, Centennial Parkway, and Ann Road. While much of the eastern and northern terrain remains open and crossed only by a Jeep Trail, the southern sections reveal the planned growth of the North Las Vegas Regional Park and the densifying street network of the era.
