2017 Map of Gay

USGS Topo · Published 2017

About this map

The settlement of Gay stands along the rocky northern shore of Lake Superior, where the Tobacco River meets the lake. This portion of the Keweenaw Peninsula, spanning the border of Keweenaw and Houghton Counties, is characterized by its transition from wooded uplands to the expansive waters of Grand Traverse Bay. Road names like Coal Dock Rd and Mohawk-Gay Rd reflect the industrial heritage of the copper mining era, when Gay served as a critical milling site for regional mines. Further south, the landscape follows the winding Traverse River toward its outlet in Traverse Bay. The coastal topography is punctuated by prominent landmarks such as Traverse Point and Louis Point, while the small settlement of Snowshoe is tucked inland, connected by a network of local routes including Gay Lake Linden Rd and Rice Lake Rd.
