About this map

The Standing Rock Indian Reservation and Cheyenne River Indian Reservation meet in this landscape of the northern plains. The terrain is defined by prominent elevations such as Twin Butte and Flat Top, which rise above the drainage networks of Butte Creek and Fourney Creek. This map, revised by the Forest Service in the late 1990s, reveals a remote ranching environment where infrastructure is sparse. Evidence of agricultural activity is found at the Dries Bros Ranch and several scattered windmills that provide water in this semi-arid region. The northern portion of the map is dominated by the Grand River National Grassland, highlighting the federal management of these expansive grazing lands.
