The Grand River carves a winding path through this western Michigan landscape, separating the developing suburban fringes of Grandville and Jenison from the rural reaches of Tallmadge. In the late 1950s, the region was characterized by small agricultural hamlets such as Vriesland, Zutphen, and Drenthe, many of which were centered around local institutions like the Zutphen Sch or South Blendon Ch. The industrial footprint is evident in the numerous Gravel Pits concentrated along the riverbanks and the Chesapeake and Ohio railroad corridor, which served as a vital transit spine through Hudsonville.
