Gregory stands as the primary hub of this South Dakota prairie landscape, organized around the Chicago and North Western railroad line. The settlement pattern reveals a community deeply rooted in its local institutions, with three distinct burial grounds—IOOF Cem, St Joseph Cem, and ZCBJ Cem—surrounding the town center. The rural sections are dotted with specialized local education centers, including the Ponca Valley Sch and Climbing Hill Sch, reflecting the distributed nature of mid-century agricultural life. This survey was conducted as part of the Department of the Interior program for the development of the Missouri River Basin. The terrain is defined by the winding paths of Ponca Creek and Masdon Creek, which cut through the townships of Rhoades, Dickens, and Jones.
