Gross occupies a quiet corner of Boyd County, Nebraska, positioned just south of the border where Gregory County, South Dakota begins. The village is organized around a simple grid including 1st Ave and 2nd Ave, surrounded by the wide ranchlands and breaks that lead toward the Missouri River. Genealogy and local history are anchored here by the Gross Cem near town and the Trinity Lutheran Cem further south.

The landscape is defined by the sharp descent from Ninemile Hill into the Ninemile Gulch, while various branches of Whisky Cr cut through the southern sections. To the northeast, the map shows the protected shoreline of the Karl E Mundt National Wildlife Refuge, where the Missouri National Recreation River and Missouri Wild and Scenic River preserve the natural character of the river valley as it was before modern channelization.
