The South Platte River and the newly established Elevenmile Canyon Reservoir dominate the northern landscape of this Park County region in the late 1950s. The area is characterized by high-altitude ranching and timber interests, evidenced by scattered family operations like the Pabst-Howe Ranch, Wiederspan Ranch, and multiple units of the Hartsel Ranch. An Old Railroad Grade traces the northern valley, a remnant of former transportation corridors that once served the mountain interior.

To the south, the terrain rises sharply toward the massive Thirtynine Mile Mountain and the peaks of the Pike National Forest. Remote camps such as Shimmins Camp and Fehlings Cow Camp are located among the drainages of Threemile Creek and Current Creek. The small settlement of Guffey sits at the southern edge, serving as a hub for the surrounding livestock and mining activities, including a solitary Mine located north of Balfour.
