The Purgatoire River carves through the heart of this Bent County landscape, defining the topography of the Picketwire Valley. This arid region is marked by a complex system of drainage and water management, where the Highland Canal runs parallel to the river's course to support local ranching. The namesake Hackamore Ranch is situated west of the river, positioned near the Tarbox Arroyo.

The terrain is deeply dissected by numerous dry washes and canyons, including Mixon Canyon and the Rock Arroyo, which feed into the primary river valley. Evidence of vital water sources in this dry environment appears at Farrington Spring, located near the confluence of Farrington Draw. A network of rural routes, such as Co RD Z and Co RD 7, provides access through the various land sections and across the Smith Draw.
