The South Fork Shenandoah River winds through the eastern portion of this quadrangle, shaping the development of riverside communities like Whitehouse Landing, White House, and Hamburg. The landscape is dominated by the dramatic ridgelines of Massanutten Mountain and Kerns Mountain, which separate the river valley from the drainage of Passage Creek. These mountains are punctuated by numerous gaps, such as Jawbone Gap and Burners Gap, which have historically dictated transit routes through the timbered reaches of the Shenandoah Forest.

Evidence of early industrial and social life is found in the northern reaches at Caroline Furnace Camp and the nearby Furnace Cemetery, while the southern end of the sheet shows the transition toward the town of Salem and the rural crossroads of Leaksville. The geography reveals a classic Appalachian pattern where human settlement is tightly clustered in the fertile bottomlands near Mill Creek and Big Run, constrained by the steep terrain of Strickler Knob and the Yellow Cliffs.
