Hamlet and the nearby Hamlet Grange serve as the primary markers of settlement in this coastal mountain landscape of northwest Oregon. The terrain is defined by a dense network of watercourses, where the North Fork Nehalem River and Little North Fork Nehalem River carve through high ridges. A system of logging roads and spurs, including the colorfully named Hop N Scratch It Rd and Hopinhome Rd, crisscrosses the slopes of Cole Mountain and Cougar Mountain. Evidence of early 21st-century land management and fire observation is visible at the Rector Lookout on Rector Ridge, while the Yunkers High Bridge provides a critical crossing over the southern reaches of the Nehalem River. The map also captures several uniquely named drainage features, such as Bastard Creek, Snark Creek, and Helloff Creek, which flow through the steep valleys of the Clatsop State Forest region.
