About this map

Potomac River narrows and winds through a complex series of ridges in this 1951 study of the tri-state border region. The town of Hancock serves as a central hub where the National Pike meets the critical transport corridor formed by the Western Maryland Railway and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. To the south, Berkeley Springs (Bath) and its northern neighborhood of North Berkeley anchor the West Virginia side of the river, while the Maryland landscape is dominated by the steep elevations of Tonoloway Ridge and Hogback Ridge.
