Harts Lake and its smaller neighbor, Little Lake, sit at the center of this 2017 study of the rural landscape south of Tacoma. The terrain is defined by a complex network of glacial drainage features, including Rocky Slough and the winding course of the Nisqually River along the southwestern corner, which marks the boundary between Pierce and Thurston counties. The area maintains a low-density residential and agricultural character, with numerous rural routes such as Anderson Brandt Rd S and Roy Petit Rd connecting scattered homesteads.
