Flathead National Forest occupies the high eastern ground of this Montana landscape, where Hash Mtn and the long spine of Peters Ridge overlook the valley below. The transition from the steep, timbered slopes of the mountains to the level floor of the Flathead Valley is marked by a dense network of small lakes including Tamarack Lake, Lake Meredith, and East Bass Lake. This aquatic geography supported early local industry at the Mill Pond near Jessup.
