The high plains of Southeast Colorado are defined by a network of seasonal drainages and isolated family outposts in this 2013 survey. The landscape transitions across the boundary of Prowers and Baca Counties, where the terrain is carved by the winding paths of North Butte Creek and Two Butte Creek. These watercourses, along with West Clay Creek and East Clay Creek to the north, dictate the placement of ranching homesteads such as Hasser Ranch and Van Deusen Ranch.
