San Isabel National Forest dominates the western half of this Huerfano County landscape, where high-elevation drainage patterns transition into the canyon-carved plains. The terrain is defined by a series of significant watercourses and geographic markers, most notably Hayden Butte and the deep cut of Pole Canyon in the southern reaches. Numerous arroyos and creeks, such as Pope Arroyo and Greasewood Arroyo, illustrate the arid hydrology of the region, carrying runoff from the mountains towards the eastern flats.
