Helotes and Grey Forest represent the northwestern edge of the Texas Hill Country at a time of significant suburban expansion from San Antonio. The terrain is defined by the Balcones Escarpment, where Black Hill overlooks a network of waterways including Leon Creek, Helotes Creek, and Culebra Creek. The 2010 landscape shows the transition from rural ranching roots, evidenced by the Madla Cemetery and Madla Ranch Rd, to modern residential developments. Historical family ties to the land are preserved in the Lee Cemetery and Menchaca Cemetery, situated near the wooded enclave of Grey Forest. The infrastructure is dominated by the loop of State Hwy 1604 Access Rd, which funnels growth toward Leon Valley while older routes like Scenic Loop Rd follow the natural contours of the northern creeks.
