Hilldale Colony is a central focal point of this northern Montana landscape, situated amidst a complex network of seasonal water management and drainage features. The geography is defined by extensive coulees and reservoirs that indicate the critical role of water control in this semi-arid environment. Significant infrastructure is evident through McLean Dam, which creates McLean Reservoir, as well as several other impoundments like Apogee Dam and Perigee Dam. These features, along with natural catchments like Mud Lake and Grassy Lake, illustrate how the local community has adapted to the terrain. Drainage is funneled through prominent natural depressions including Dog Coulee and Willow Coulee, while Amos Trl provides one of the few named transport routes through the section lines of Hill County.
