About this map

The transition from the irrigated valley floors to the higher timberlands of the Modoc National Forest defines this part of Lassen County. In the west, the Big Valley River and its accompanying Slough are managed through an extensive network of infrastructure, including levee systems, the Babcock Ditch, and a Gaging Station. This water management supported the small settlement at Pumpkin Center and surrounding agricultural lands before the terrain rises sharply toward the east.

The eastern portion of the map is dominated by the ridges surrounding Indian Peak and the drainage of South Fork Hog Valley Creek. This area is marked by numerous water sources named for local families and landmarks, such as Billy Packwood Spring, Jim Packwood Spring, and Cove Spring. Human presence in these higher elevations is noted by Ditch Camp and the Hog Valley Reservoir, connected by a network of 4wd trails used for forest management and ranching.
