The Middle Fork Clearwater River and the Lochsa River converge in this high-altitude section of the Clearwater National Forest. This terrain is deeply marked by history, tracing the overlapping routes of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and the Nez Perce (Ne-Me-Poo) National Historic Trail along the northern ridges. These paths follow the high ground above the steep river canyons, passing through Greensward Camp and Indian Grave Camp.
