Snake River canyon walls define the geography of this Baker County borderland, where the Hells Canyon Reservoir fills the deep divide between Oregon and Idaho. The settlement of Homestead and the neighboring site of Copperfield sit along the western bank, connected by the river-hugging Homestead Rd. Local history is anchored at the Homestead Cem near the river's edge, while modern infrastructure is represented by the Oxbow Airport and the community of Oxbow to the south. The terrain is marked by steep elevation changes, with the Kleinschmidt Grade and Windy Ridge Rd providing access to the high backcountry of the Payette National Forest and Whitman National Forest. Numerous seasonal and perennial drainages such as Ironduke Cr and McDougal Cr carve through the landscape, feeding into the reservoir below.
