The Snake River-Hells Canyon Reservoir defines this reach of the Oregon-Idaho border, carving through the depths of Hells Canyon. On the Oregon side, the settlement of Homestead sits near the riverbanks below Windy Ridge, accompanied by the Homestead Cem. This area, heavily influenced by early 20th-century mining, still bears labels for the Ironduke Mine and the mineral-rich Limepoint area.

The landscape is partitioned by numerous creek drainages such as Ballard Creek and Herman Creek, all flowing toward the reservoir. On the Idaho bank, the Payette National Forest rises steeply, contrasting with the Wallowa National Forest and Whitman National Forest to the west. Recreational development is evident through the Hells Canyon Park and the Hells Canyon Boat Ramp, marking the shift from a purely industrial mining frontier to a managed wilderness and recreation area.
