Houghton Lake defines the eastern edge of this modern survey, where the resort communities of Houghton Lake Heights and the village of Houghton Lake cluster along the shoreline. The landscape transitions sharply from these residential pockets into the low-lying wetlands of the west, dominated by the Houghton Lake Flats Flooding and the headwaters of the Muskegon River. This area is characterized by a dense network of drainage and water management, including the Nellsville Ditch, which cuts through the marshy terrain toward the settlement of Nellsville.
