Noatak National Preserve defines the vast majority of this landscape in the Northwest Arctic Borough. The terrain is characterized by the meandering path of the Aniuk River, which flows through the central and southern sections before its confluence with the larger Noatak River in the southeast corner. This 2017 survey illustrates the complex drainage patterns and numerous small ponds that dot the river valleys between rising topographic ridges. Part of a larger wilderness protection area, the map details a region devoid of permanent settlements or roads, focusing instead on the natural hydrology and the Public Land Survey System boundaries that organize this remote part of Alaska.
